Databases can be deleted and will be physically removed from the hard disk. This process is irreversible and it is therefore recommended to first create a backup of the database. In general the size of a backup is about 12% of the size of the original database.

Note that shared databases can only be deleted if you are identified as administrator (check the Installation guideline for LAN).
