Manage taxonomies

Here taxon lists (species lists) can be edited, imported and even deleted (only in the case there is no reference to any plot observation). In the left table a taxonomy can be selected (activate the cell by pressing the Enter or Return-key on the cell if the name needs to be changed). Hit the Load taxa button to load the list of items that can then be edited in the right table. Records in either of the two tables cannot be deleted, as long as there are dependencies with species data records in other tables in the database.

The SbsTaxonListID in the left table is only needed in case multiple taxonomies from the SynBioSys taxon database are in use. Exclusively used taxonomies from the SynBioSys taxon database enable the comparison of plots related to different taxonomies in Europe.

For managing traits there is separate section.

The import/export menu comprises five options:

IMPORT

1. Import Turboveg2 taxon list

A Turboveg2 taxon list can also be imported from a file, either from a Turboveg2 taxon list (species.dbf) or from an Excel file. Taxon lists can be imported if they are not yet present in the database, or if an existing taxon list (taxonomy) needs to be updated.

In case of a new list, a meaningful name in the Name for taxon list box needs to be entered. In case of an update, select a name from the drop-down list.

An update is rejected if errors are detected (e.g. a synonym without a correct reference to an accepted taxon concept).

If no Turboveg2 taxon list is available, then such a list can also be imported from an Excel file. In such case select as file type 'Turboveg taxon list (*.xlsx)' in file open-dialog window.

2. Import Turboveg3 taxon list

A taxon list for Turboveg3 can be obtained by exporting the taxonomy concerned from the current form (Import/Export button). Note that In the Excel file the order and the names of the  columns may not not be changed and that the values for ID and TV2SpeciesID should be unique. For IsSynonym fill in 0 (false) or 1 (true). In case IsSynonym is 0 than TV2SpeciesNr = TV2ValidNr.

Note that rows with new id's are imported and rows with an existing id in the database will cause replacement of the scientific name,  vernacular name and author.

(see also 5. Export Turboveg3 taxon list)

3. Import SynBioSys taxonomy

Ready to use taxon lists can be downloaded from the SynBioSys taxon database. This database is the taxonomic backbone of the European Vegetation Archive (EVA)  and is restricted to European countries. The database holds more than 50 taxonomies covering various European countries and regions. However, only use this option if no Turboveg2 taxon lists are available.

EXPORT

4. Export to Turboveg2 taxon list

In case a taxon list is updated in the Turboveg3 database it is recommended to make an export to the corresponding Turboveg2 taxon to keep both lists in sync.

5. Export to Turboveg3 taxon list

Instead of editing a taxon list in Turboveg3 the list can also be exported to a spreadsheet file and edited in Excel. After editing the file can be imported in the Turboveg3 database (see also 2. Import Turboveg3 taxon list).
